The Art of the Pitch: What Business Angels Really Listen For
By Ever to Excel – Business Angel & Startup Consulting
After hundreds of pitches, patterns emerge that have very little to do with slide design. Here is what experienced business angels are actually listening for underneath the words.
How You Talk About Failure
Every founder has a failure story, even early on – a wrong hire, a pivot, a customer who churned. How you narrate that story tells an angel far more than your growth chart does. Defensive founders minimise; strong founders extract a clear lesson and show how it changed their behaviour.
Whether You Understand Your Own Numbers
Angels are not primarily testing whether your projections are correct – nobody’s are. They are testing whether you understand the assumptions underneath them well enough to explain, without notes, exactly what would need to change for the numbers to be wrong.
How You Respond to a Genuinely Hard Question
The specific answer matters less than the visible thought process. Founders who pause, think honestly and admit uncertainty where it exists build more trust than founders who produce a smooth, rehearsed answer to every possible objection.
Whether the Passion Is About the Problem or the Money
Founders motivated primarily by solving a problem tend to persist through the inevitable difficult years in ways that founders primarily motivated by a future valuation often do not. This distinction is usually audible within the first few minutes of genuine conversation.
How You Talk About Your Team
Founders who credit their team specifically and generously – rather than speaking in the collective, faceless “we” – signal a leadership style that tends to retain talent through difficult periods, which matters enormously to an investor thinking about the next five years.
The Bottom Line
The best slide deck cannot compensate for a founder who cannot think clearly under pressure. Angels are not evaluating your presentation skills – they are using the pitch as a low-stakes preview of how you will handle the much higher-stakes conversations still ahead.
